Activities
Over the past decade, Berlin has developed to be a German and European Centre of Excellence for the development and demonstration of hydrogen as an energy carrier, and especially as a future transport fuel. Hydrogen has the potential to ensure a sustainable future mobility.
Even before the Clean Energy Project (CEP) was launched by the German Government in 2002, major stakeholder had started their activities in Berlin. Since the commencement activities have intensified and made Berlin the leading European region for the demonstration of hydrogen mobility.
One of the highlights of this work has been the activities of locally based companies, such as the Public Transport Company (BVG) and TOTAL Deutschland, who have engaged in projects establishing hydrogen infrastructure and using hydrogen technologies in public transport since the 1990s.
One of the main challenges in the future will be the production and distribution of sustainable hydrogen – that is hydrogen that is produced through the use of renewable resources. Regional solutions will play an important role in this, and the federal state of Brandenburg, which surrounds the German capital, has the potential to become a major player in sustainable hydrogen production from biomass and wind energy.
As a prominent center of science and research, Berlin has contributed to the hydrogen community for years and will increase its commitment in the coming decade. The concerted efforts of central stakeholders from research and development, in collaboration with fleet operators and other customers underlines the importance of this topic and the networking activities in Berlin.
